Unexpected Building Materials That Work
September 18, 2014When you think about construction materials, you probably think about things like concrete, steel, wood and maybe even brick. These classic materials work well, but may not make a statement. At Luetgert Development, we’re always following building and home design trends. If you want a building that stands out as much as your personality, consider building or simply decorating with these unusual materials.
Bamboo
It’s not just food for panda bears. In recent years, the popularity of bamboo as a building material has skyrocketed. It’s flexible, thrives in diverse climates, and is aesthetically-pleasing. Check out these sustainable structures made mostly of bamboo. If you’d prefer to use this product in moderation, try bamboo on an accent wall, or in furniture!
Tires
Recycled rubber has been used in playgrounds for a while, but not many people think to use it in their home. Often referred to as “Earthships,” these tire-based homes are low-cost, comfortable, and energy-efficient. This Earthship in Kansas is one of the best. From garden statement pieces to chairs, recycled tires can be used for many different functions in your home.
Bottles and Cans
Instead of throwing away your bottles and cans, why not try to build something out of them? John Milkovisch built the famous Beer Can House in an effort to clean out his cans and help the environment. Meanwhile, in Canada, there’s an interesting house made out of 25,000 recycled glass bottles. While you may not want to go to either of these extremes with bottles or cans, they still make great additions to your décor, especially as light fixtures.
Straw Bales
Farmers and equestrian property owners, you’re in luck with this one. Like bamboo, straw is another organic material that can be recycled in construction and in design. This striking modern home in Santa Cruz proves that straw can go hand-in-hand with style. Straw is obviously a fun material to decorate with during the fall season. It can also serve as seating arrangements for your backyard or within an equestrian stable.
Shipping Containers and Pallets
Until a few years ago, no one could’ve imagined turning shipping containers into unique homes. This post shows how diverse homes made from these containers can be even though they’re made from similar products. Shipping pallets have been huge home décor trend lately, too. We’ve seen reconstructed wine racks, tables, art pieces and even floors made from pallets!
