How to Start Decorating Your New Home – Part 2

April 30, 2015

Welcome back for part two of our blog series, How to Start Decorating Your New Home. Decorating your new home can be a challenge. We here at Luetgert Development want you to be happy in your new home, and we hope these tips help you get started on your way to decorating your new cozy abode.

Hopefully, you have been able to get started with the first steps we recommended in part one of our blog series. If you have already created a notebook with ideas, set your budget and have your list of rooms finished, then you are ready to get started with the next steps. Here is a basic list of what you should consider next.

Walls & Ceilings

It’s much easier to have your home painted before you move in so you do not have to deal with moving or covering up furniture. If this is not an option for you, the best thing to do is move all the furniture to the center of the room and cover it up so no paint gets on it.

Lighting

Choose your lighting options for each room. Try to picture how you want the room to look overall. You can get ideas from the notebook you created. If you are having your home custom built, work with your builder to find the best lighting options for you.

Windows

There are so many options for window treatments, such as shutters, blinds and curtains.  It’s going to be hard to choose, but you can get inspiration and ideas from your notebook or Pinterest.

Furniture

When considering furniture pieces, imagine how they will look in your room. Remember to measure the room, and if there are any small spaces that will need to have a specific sized item in the area, be sure to take those measurements as well. Have fun selecting furniture, and don’t forget to bring your notebook along for ideas.

Evaluate Needs and Set Priorities

Make sure to evaluate your needs and set priorities for decorating your home. This will allow you to get things done in order of necessity. You will have to prioritize your needs over wants at first. For example, if all the windows need coverings for privacy, this will probably be at the top of your list. You may want to get estimates on how much it will be to cover the windows, schedule installations and deduct this from your budget.

In order to avoid being overwhelmed with decorating, it’s best to look at one room at a time. Start with the most important room and go from there. Most of all, have fun and choose things you love.
