Finishing Touches in Home Design

From small home design elements to paint color and flooring choices, the special features and finishing touches help to make a home unique. Consider the following details when designing your new home.
Lighting
Well-placed lighting can go a long way to enhance the look and feel in your home. Make sure to position lights in areas that need to be illuminated, like near a couch, bedside table, above the kitchen counter or over the dining room table. To enhance the ambiance of the space, mix up the levels and types of fixtures you are using. Try a variety of lights ranging from ceiling lights to lamps and even chandeliers in different places of your home. Pendant lights suspended from the ceiling and wall sconces can help create a dramatic effect. Pick out glass light covers and decorative lamp shades, too!
Flooring
Choosing the right flooring is a big decision for homeowners to make and it will often vary from room to room. Should they choose carpet or tile for the living room? Would hardwood floors look good in the foyer? Which colors or stains speak to them? Customers may even go with a less popular option like brick or cork. Flooring should be durable and functional, but also have the potential to show off your taste. To add some extra pizzazz to your flooring, play with patterns using tile, or change up the direction and sizes of wood panels.
Walls and Windows
The paint colors you select for your walls say a lot about you. Color influences the mood of a room, which is why picking paint can be challenging for homeowners. Some choose to stay neutral throughout the home, while others go with bright hues or select accent walls for pops or color. They may forgo paint and use textured wallpaper or a brick featured wall instead. Just like wall colors, the fabrics and window treatments you choose can make a statement. With curtains, draperies, blinds and cornices, there are a lot of window treatment options!
Furniture and Décor
When all else fails, the furniture and décor you choose can really show off your personal design style. Do you prefer a traditional or modern look? How about transitional, which blends the two together? Experiment with different patterns, furniture, art and accent pieces. If something no longer fits in one room, try it in another. What’s great about décor is that you can always change it as your needs and tastes change.
