Mudrooms provide a barrier between outside and the rest of your home. Rather than trekking wet clothing, shoes or umbrellas through the house, store these and other everyday items in this room by the door. They are the perfect drop areas for children’s backpacks, outdoor toys, shoes and coats.

While a mudroom is an area for children and adults to drop their belongings, it can still be organized. When designing yours, plan out space to leave keys and mail and provide hooks for purses, backpacks and coats. Cubbies, shelving and racks are great for shoes and outdoor toys.

Because the mudroom is the buffer between your home and the outdoors, choose furniture that is durable and easy to clean. Consider adding a bench or chairs for shoe tying and a rug for wiping feet.
Attached Laundry Room
Some people choose to keep their mudroom close or combined with the laundry room. Having a sink and laundry hamper nearby comes in handy when dealing with kid’s messy sports uniforms and play clothes. It is also a good place to keep a vacuum, mop and broom for easy clean-up.
Pet Amenities
For the homeowner with dogs or pets that like to go outside, it may be nice to add a doggie door and shower station to the mudroom. Pets need an area to get clean, too, before entering other rooms in your home.
