5 Ways to Manage Cord Clutter at Home
February 5, 2015We live in a high-technology world and that means having to deal with all the cords and wires from the electronics and gadgets we have in our homes. Sometimes it can seem like the cords are taking over our lives as they are everywhere – the kitchen, the family room, the bedroom and all points in between. But it doesn’t have to be this way. As a custom home builder in Ocala, we at Luetgert Development are very familiar with the modern needs of today’s homeowners. For the custom homes we build for our customers, we take all of today’s technological needs into consideration when planning for the number and placement of power outlets. With that in mind here are five ways to deal with cord clutter and not let it interfere with your home’s décor.
Zip Ties and Velcro
One way to deal with cords is to fasten them to the underside of your television table or computer desk. You can use zip ties or Velcro strips to gather your cords together and mount small hooks beneath the table or desk to keep them out of the way.
Area Rugs
We typically include floor outlets in the custom homes we build for our clients. This helps with furniture arrangement as tables with lamps are not forced to be along the wall. If you want to float a furniture arrangement in the middle of the room consider placing a great area rug in the room to can hide the electrical cord.
Special Products
They say necessity is the mother of invention, and it’s true. Recognizing the influx of cords in our lives, many businesses have created products to help make it easier for homeowners. From cord boxes that hide and protect the entire power strip inside to cord management products that hold your cords, there are many products to fit your individual needs.
DIY Wall Tricks
Depending on your wall type, you can do a little DIY action to hide your cords. Drill a small hall in your drywall behind your mounted flat screen, for example. Then drill another opening near the bottom. Drop your cords inside and pull them out below and plug them in.
Custom Options
There is always the option of hiring an electrician to come to your home and put outlets exactly where you need them. When we build a new home these days, we put in power outlets where we know today’s homeowners will use them. These include placement above the fireplace, where many people place TVs these days, in the floors of certain rooms, and plenty above the countertops in the kitchen. Another popular option is a charging drawer in the kitchen where you can charge all your smartphones and electronics out of site. What do you think about these tips for dealing with cord clutter?
