How to Protect Your Home During the Holidays
December 24, 2015Everyone loves the holiday season, including burglars and thieves. That’s why it’s important for you to take certain home safety precautions in the midst of all your celebrations and holiday travels.
As a custom home builder in Ocala, we at Luetgert Development know that our clients love and cherish their homes. That’s why we like to remind our clients and readers of this blog about the importance of protecting their homes.
As you celebrate at home and make plans to travel, use these tips to help protect your home during the holidays.
Use Timers for Lighting
If you aren’t already controlling your light via your smart phone, you can use timers to control the lights in your home. This makes it look like you’re home even when you’re not. You might also consider adding sensor lights at your entrance and exit points that will go on with any movement. Check out our previous blog on great home gadgets that can help with this.
Stop your Mail and Newspaper
This one is a given but some people do forget. Nothing says “We’re not home” more than mail spilling out of your mailbox and several newspapers in your paper box or driveway. Put that on your travel checklist.
Alert Your Neighbors
You don’t need to tell everyone, but it’s a good idea to let a trusted neighbor or friend know your travel plans. That way someone can be looking for any unusual activity at your home while you’re away. This is when nosey neighbors can really come in handy.
Watch What You Post on Social
It’s wonderful that you and your family are hitting the slopes in Colorado or cruising in the Caribbean during the holidays, but you don’t have to broadcast that on social media. Not everyone on Facebook is really your friend. Resist the urge to check in via social media at exotic locales and post immediate photos of your wonderful vacation. Those can wait until your return.
Be Careful With Your Home Garbage
That new jumbo flat screen that Santa brought you is very nice, but everyone driving by your house doesn’t have to know about it. Resist the urge of tossing all the boxes to the curb, whether you’re traveling or not. You’re letting everyone know about the nice new things available inside your house. Break bigger boxes down and put them inside your garbage can.
What do you think about these home protection tips? Take the necessary precautions to ensure your holiday season really is the most wonderful time of the year.
