Celebrate Houseplant Appreciation Day in Your Custom-Built Home
January 8, 2016The winter months are the perfect time to add some greenery inside your home. When nothing much is growing outside, it’s nice to see nature at work inside your custom-built home with houseplants.
You don’t need a special holiday to appreciate houseplants for the work they do in helping to beautify and clean the air in your home. But since Jan. 10 is Houseplant Appreciation Day, a day dedicated to growing, caring for and loving houseplants, why not celebrate by adding a new houseplant or two? As a custom-home builder in Ocala, we at Luetgert Development certainly appreciate houseplants and thought it would be great to offer some tips for our customers and readers of this blog.
Houseplants are working plants
Houseplants aren’t just great for adding some live greenery to your home, they also provide health benefits, too. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making them great for indoors. They can increase the humidity of a room and also remove toxins from the air, including 87 percent of the volatile organic compounds or VOCs often found in rugs, vinyl, grocery bags and paint.
Suggestions for Houseplants
Now that you know how beneficial plants can be for your health, here are a few plants that are best for indoor use. The spider plant and dragon tree are both great for purifying air, while the Boston fern humidifies air. The Philodendron and Snake plant are also great for purifying air and removing formaldehyde, while the peace lily is great for removing mold from air.
History behind Houseplant Appreciation Day
Houseplant Appreciation Day was created by the folks at The Gardener’s Network for two reasons: to remind people after the holidays that their forgotten houseplants need a little attention; and to celebrate beneficial houseplants and encourage their growth. They suggest celebrating by making sure houseplants are well watered and giving them a treat – like a little fertilizer. If you don’t have any, buy one or two to add to your home, or give one as a gift to a friend.
