These results are from the Houzz Bedrooms Trends Survey, a recent survey of more than 1,500 homeowners who are in the midst of planning or have recently completed a bedroom-renovation project.
Why Change the Bedroom
The top reason for renovating the master bedroom was that homeowners just couldn’t stand the old one any longer. They had apparently had their fill. The next reasons were finally being able to afford the update and buying a new home. About 21 percent want to increase the size of their bedroom, and more than half want to increase the size of their closets.
Choosing Colors
When it comes to colors for the bedroom, it’s likely no surprise that many of today’s homeowners are choosing calming colors. Think shades of white, cream, gray and blue for these renovated spaces. While 27 percent do not plan to choose a strong pattern in the master bedroom, 21 percent like floral while 17 percent like geometric prints.
We Like Our Pillows
Adding decorative pillows is a top update for the 67 percent of homeowners planning to update their bedding. A whopping 75 percent have their eyes on decorative pillows as a top update, with four pillows being the average, while 40 percent have five or more decorative pillows.
What About Electronics?
While one in 10 want a bedroom free of electronics and media – sounds romantic to us – 13 percent plan to add a TV or other electronic device. In fact, TVs are the top electronic upgrade at 87 percent, followed by stereos/speakers at 35 percent and docking stations at 21 percent.
How Much Will It Cost?
Of course renovation projects will vary depending on what you want to accomplish, but about 26 percent of those surveyed plan to spend $10,000 or more on master bedroom renovations. And 19 percent plan to spend $5,000 or more.
